[Mask] Grunge Textures

Grunge masks are the workhorse layer behind most convincing weathering — not a texture you look at directly, but the grayscale pattern that controls where dirt, rust, or paint chipping shows through in a layered material. This collection covers grunge, stencil, and noise-based mask patterns built for compositing and material blending.

What's in this collection

  • Grunge blend — organic, irregular dirt and wear patterns. Material layering, weathering, edge wear.
  • Stencil pattern — hard-edged cutout shapes. Spray paint effects, military markings, graphic overlays.
  • Noise mask — fine-grain random patterns. Breaking up uniform surfaces, dissolve effects, procedural variation.
  • Splatter and drip — directional stain and liquid-spread patterns. Blood, paint, oil, and liquid damage effects.

All tiles are seamless in both directions and delivered at high resolution.

Where grunge masks are used

Material authoring. Substance Painter and Designer use grunge masks constantly to blend a clean base material with dirt, rust, or paint-loss layers based on curvature and exposure.

VFX and compositing. Dissolve transitions, edge burn effects, and layered damage overlays in After Effects and Nuke.

Game environment art. Vertex-painted or texture-masked wear on props and environment surfaces — grunge masks are what make a hand-painted wear layer look organic instead of uniform.

Graphic design. Distressed poster and album art effects, stencil-style branding, and urban design aesthetics.

How to use these in Blender

  1. Import as Non-Color data and plug into a Mix Shader or Mix Color node's Factor input to blend two materials — clean paint and exposed metal, for example.
  2. Combine with a Color Ramp node to control how sharply the blend transitions, from a soft gradient to a hard-edged mask.
  3. Layer multiple grunge masks with different Mapping scales for a less uniform, more organic wear pattern.

How to use these in Substance Painter / Designer

  1. Load as a Generator or manual Grunge Map input on a layer mask to control paint-loss or dirt accumulation.
  2. Combine with curvature and ambient occlusion generators for physically-plausible wear that concentrates on edges and recesses.
  3. Use stencil variants directly with the Stencil tool for hard-edged spray or marking effects.

How to use these in Unreal Engine 5 / Unity

  1. Import as a grayscale mask and use it in a Lerp (UE5) or custom blend shader (Unity) to mix two material layers based on the mask value.
  2. Drive dissolve or reveal effects by animating a threshold value against the mask in a material function.
  3. Combine with vertex color or world-position masks for masks that respond to gameplay state, such as damage accumulation.

Tips for grunge masks specifically

These work best combined, not alone. Layering two or three masks at different scales and rotations avoids the repeating pattern that a single mask reveals under close inspection.

For physically believable wear, bias the mask toward edges and high-curvature areas rather than applying it uniformly — real-world wear concentrates where objects get touched, bumped, or exposed to weather.

Keep a non-destructive workflow. Because these are grayscale control layers rather than final color, they're meant to be recombined and adjusted per-project rather than baked in once.
