[Tile] Encaustic Textures

Encaustic tile carries its pattern in the body of the clay, not in a printed glaze. That means the design wears down with the surface instead of chipping off, and the colours stay matte throughout.

Free for personal and commercial use. No attribution required. Commercial games, film, and client work are all permitted. No credit, no backlink, no permission request needed. You may not resell or redistribute the texture files themselves as a texture pack.

What's in this collection

How to use these in Blender

1. Load the map into Base Color with Metallic at 0.
2. Set Roughness around 0.6; cement tile is matte, unlike glazed ceramic.
3. Keep tiling to whole numbers so the pattern grid stays aligned.
4. Add a shallow bevel or bump at grout lines rather than deep displacement.

How to use these in Unreal Engine 5

1. Import at 2K and set tiling per tile unit, not per metre, to preserve the motif.
2. Use a separate grout mask so joint colour can be changed independently.
3. Add a wear mask through walkways with a lerp to a faded albedo.
4. Keep specular flat; strong reflection makes cement tile look like vinyl.

How to use these in Unity

1. Create a URP Lit material with Smoothness near 0.25.
2. Align UVs to the room grid so the pattern meets the wall cleanly.
3. Use a light normal map for the grout recess only.
4. Vary tile rotation in 90 degree steps for authentic hand-laid layouts.

Tips for encaustic tile specifically

The pattern must land whole at room edges. Cutting a motif mid-way at a wall looks like a UV mistake even though real installers do exactly that — when in doubt, keep a border row.

Colours are chalky and low contrast. Bright saturated encaustic reads as modern printed tile.

Wear should soften the pattern, not scratch it. Fade the motif rather than adding scratches over the top.
