[Ground] Mossy Textures

Mossy ground marks the spots where moisture and shade have let growth take hold — patchy green over grass, gravel, or soil. It turns a flat, uniform ground texture into something that looks like it's been sitting outdoors for years.

What's in this collection

  • Mossy grass — green patches breaking through worn grass cover.
  • Mossy gravel — damp stone fill with growth in the gaps.
  • Mossy soil — dark, shaded earth with scattered green cover.
  • Mossy cracked ground — growth settling into old fracture lines.

All tiles are seamless in both directions and delivered at high resolution.

Where Mossy Ground is used

Forest and woodland environments. Shaded, damp forest floors rely on mossy ground for believable undergrowth.

Ruins and abandoned sites. Overgrown paths and forgotten structures use moss to sell years of neglect.

Garden and landscape visualization. Shaded planting areas and stepping-stone paths often include mossy transitions.

Fantasy environment art. Ancient forest and swamp settings lean on mossy ground for atmosphere.

How to use these in Blender

  1. Import base color, normal, and roughness maps in the Shading tab.
  2. Connect each map into a Principled BSDF's matching input.
  3. Use a Mapping node to vary moss patch scale across terrain.
  4. Mix with a bare ground variant using a noise-driven Mix Shader.

How to use these in Unreal Engine 5

  1. Import the texture set into your Content Browser.
  2. Build a Landscape Material with Base Color, Normal, and Roughness.
  3. Use Landscape Layer Blend to fade moss in around shaded areas.
  4. Paint the layer onto terrain with the sculpt tools.

How to use these in Unity

  1. Add the maps to your Textures folder with correct import types.
  2. Create a Terrain Layer from the mossy ground albedo and normal maps.
  3. Assign it in the Terrain component's paint tool.
  4. Blend it with a base layer using a low-opacity splat map.

Tips for Mossy Ground specifically

Concentrate moss along shaded edges and low points where real moisture would actually collect.

Keep roughness moderate rather than high; moss holds a little dampness and shows a faint sheen in direct light.

Avoid covering an entire surface evenly — patchy, irregular coverage reads as far more natural than a uniform blanket.
