[Stone] Basalt Textures

Basalt is dark, fine-grained volcanic rock — dense, almost black, and often broken into sharp angular fragments or hexagonal columns. It reads instantly as rugged, volcanic terrain in a way lighter stones like granite or limestone simply can't.

What's in this collection

  • Cracked basalt — fractured dark stone with sharp fault lines.
  • Rough basalt — unpolished, coarse volcanic surface.
  • Natural basalt — even, dense rock texture straight from the quarry.
  • Weathered basalt — softened edges and mineral staining from exposure.

All tiles are seamless in both directions and delivered at high resolution.

Where Basalt is used

Volcanic environment art. Lava fields, cliffs, and eruption zones default to basalt for their ground and rock formations.

Coastal and cliff terrain. Dark volcanic coastlines and sea cliffs rely on basalt's distinct dark tone.

Architectural cladding. Basalt tile and paving appears in modern facade and landscape visualization.

Fantasy and sci-fi settings. Basalt's dramatic dark tone suits ominous or otherworldly locations.

How to use these in Blender

  1. Import base color, normal, and roughness maps in the Shading tab.
  2. Connect each map into a Principled BSDF's matching input.
  3. Use a Mapping node to scale fracture patterns to rock size.
  4. Add displacement for close-up hero rock formations.

How to use these in Unreal Engine 5

  1. Import the texture set into your Content Browser.
  2. Build a Landscape or static mesh Material with the texture set.
  3. Wire Base Color, Normal, and Roughness into their inputs.
  4. Apply to cliffs, lava terrain, or scattered rock props.

How to use these in Unity

  1. Add the maps to your Textures folder with correct import types.
  2. Create a Material using the Standard or URP Lit shader.
  3. Assign Albedo, Normal, and Smoothness to their slots.
  4. Use as a Terrain Layer for volcanic ground and cliff faces.

Tips for Basalt specifically

Keep values dark and desaturated — basalt's identity comes from being noticeably darker than surrounding rock types.

Add warm highlights near cracks if pairing with lava or heat sources for a more convincing volcanic scene.

Vary fracture scale between large formations and scattered debris for a more natural rockfield.
