[Background] Grunge Textures

Grunge backgrounds bring in the wear a plain digital canvas doesn't have on its own: scratches, stains, and uneven texture that feel handled rather than rendered. They're the fastest way to age a design without building a filter stack from scratch, and they hold up at full resolution instead of falling apart when you zoom in.

How to use these in Photoshop

  1. Select All, then Edit > Define Pattern.
  2. New layer above your design, fill with the pattern.
  3. Set the layer blend mode to Multiply or Overlay.
  4. Mask out areas where the grunge is too heavy.

How to use these in Figma

  1. Drag the image in as a new image fill.
  2. Place it on a top layer set to Multiply blend mode.
  3. Lower opacity until the grunge reads as texture, not noise.
  4. Duplicate and rotate for larger compositions without visible repeats.

How to use these in After Effects

  1. Import the texture as a footage item.
  2. Set the layer's blend mode to Overlay or Screen.
  3. Animate opacity for a flickering, aged film effect.
  4. Add Grain to unify it with the rest of your footage.

Tips for Grunge Background specifically

Multiply blend mode almost always reads better than a flat overlay — it keeps your base design visible underneath.

Combine a Dust Grunge with a Stained Grunge at low opacity for more depth than either alone.

Keep one clean version of your design saved before applying grunge, since heavy layering is hard to undo selectively.
