[Fabric] Linen Textures

Linen sits between canvas and silk: a plain weave with irregular slubs where the flax thread thickens. Those irregularities are what stop it looking like a printed grid.

What's in this collection

  • Natural linen — undyed flax with visible slubs and warm grey tone.
  • Washed linen — softened weave with relaxed crumple and matte finish.
  • Fine linen — tight even weave used for shirting and bedding.
  • Aged linen — yellowed fibres with light staining and thinning areas.

All tiles are seamless in both directions and delivered at high resolution.

Where linen is used

Interior visualization. Curtains, bedding, cushions and upholstered seating.

Character clothing. Historical tunics, shirts and simple robes.

Product mockups. Book cloth, packaging wraps and label backgrounds.

Set dressing. Table linens, drapes and hanging cloth in period scenes.

How to use these in Blender

  1. Load the map into Base Color with Metallic at 0.
  2. Add a Sheen value around 0.2 so grazing angles pick up the fibre.
  3. Keep Roughness near 0.75 — linen is matte but not dead flat.
  4. Use Cloth simulation and let the weave follow the deformed UVs.

How to use these in Unreal Engine 5

  1. Use the Cloth shading model so backlit drapes read correctly.
  2. Import at 2K and tile 3–5 times per metre for bedding.
  3. Add a subtle fuzz mask on silhouette edges.
  4. Keep normal strength low; heavy weave normals look like burlap.

How to use these in Unity

  1. Create a URP Lit material with Smoothness around 0.2.
  2. Assign the weave normal at 0.5 strength.
  3. Use a detail map for close-up shots of pillows and sheets.
  4. Vary tiling slightly between neighbouring cloth props to break repetition.

Tips for linen specifically

Linen creases sharply and holds the crease. Add fold detail in the normal map or geometry, otherwise it reads as polyester.

Undyed linen is never pure white. Keep a slight warm grey cast even on bright bedding.

Slub distribution should look random. A repeating slub every few centimetres is the giveaway of a badly tiled source.
