[Ground] Rocky Textures

Rocky ground covers the middle ground between bare stone and soft earth — loose stones and rubble embedded in dirt, grass, or gravel. It's what most hiking trails and mountain terrain actually look like underfoot.

What's in this collection

  • Rocky grass — embedded stones breaking through a grass base.
  • Rocky gravel — loose rubble mixed with fine gravel fill.
  • Rocky soil — stones set into compact, dark earth.
  • Rocky mud — stones partially submerged in wet ground.

All tiles are seamless in both directions and delivered at high resolution.

Where Rocky Ground is used

Mountain and trail terrain. Hiking paths, riverbeds, and highland areas rely on rocky ground for realism.

Open-world blend layers. Rocky textures mask hard transitions between grass, dirt, and cliff materials.

Off-road driving games. Rocky ground affects both visual detail and implied vehicle traction.

Nature documentaries and archviz. Rugged terrain shots and outdoor site plans use it for grounding realism.

How to use these in Blender

  1. Import base color, normal, and roughness maps in the Shading tab.
  2. Connect each map into a Principled BSDF's matching input.
  3. Use a Mapping node to control stone scale relative to terrain.
  4. Layer with a smoother ground texture using a Mix Shader.

How to use these in Unreal Engine 5

  1. Import the texture set into your Content Browser.
  2. Build a Landscape Material with Base Color, Normal, and Roughness.
  3. Use Landscape Layer Blend to mix rocky ground with grass or dirt.
  4. Paint the layer onto terrain with the sculpt tools.

How to use these in Unity

  1. Add the maps to your Textures folder with correct import types.
  2. Create a Terrain Layer from the rocky ground albedo and normal maps.
  3. Assign it in the Terrain component's paint tool.
  4. Set Tile Size so individual stones read at a believable scale.

Tips for Rocky Ground specifically

Match stone size to camera distance — chunky rocks read well up close but turn to noise from far away.

Blend rocky ground with a softer base layer at low opacity so stones look embedded rather than pasted on top.

Use displacement or a normal map with strong depth for hero shots where the camera gets close to the ground.
