[Metal] Cast Textures

Cast metal is defined by its mould, not by polishing. The surface keeps sand grain, shrinkage pits and parting-line ridges, which is exactly what makes it read as industrial rather than machined.

What's in this collection

  • Sand cast plate — coarse granular surface from green sand moulds.
  • Cast iron — dense dark surface with fine porosity and light oxide.
  • Die cast — smoother skin with faint flow lines and ejector marks.
  • Weathered cast — oxidised surface with pitting and dust settled in recesses.

All tiles are seamless in both directions and delivered at high resolution.

Where cast metal is used

Industrial environments. Machine housings, engine blocks, valve bodies, pump casings.

Street and city props. Manhole covers, bollards, lamp bases, drain grates.

Weapon and vehicle art. Receiver bodies and gearbox casings that should not look milled.

Architectural detail. Cast railings, brackets and radiator panels.

How to use these in Blender

  1. Load the map into Base Color and keep Metallic at 1.0.
  2. Set Roughness around 0.55–0.7; cast metal scatters light broadly.
  3. Drive a Bump node at low strength — the grain is shallow, not carved.
  4. Add a subtle Noise-driven roughness break-up so highlights are not uniform.

How to use these in Unreal Engine 5

  1. Import at 2K and pack roughness into a separate channel to save memory.
  2. Keep Metallic at 1 and let roughness carry all the variation.
  3. Layer a dirt mask driven by world-space Z for horizontal cast surfaces.
  4. Avoid strong normal intensity; over-driven grain looks like sandpaper.

How to use these in Unity

  1. Use a URP Lit material with Metallic set to 1 and Smoothness near 0.35.
  2. Assign the map to Base Map and reuse it as a roughness source if needed.
  3. Tile 1–2 times per metre for machine-scale props.
  4. Enable specular highlights so the broad sheen stays visible.

Tips for cast metal specifically

Cast surfaces almost never have sharp mirror reflections. If a render looks chrome-like, roughness is too low rather than the texture being wrong.

Parting lines and gate marks sell the material. Place them along mesh edges rather than in the middle of a flat face.

Keep the albedo dark and desaturated. Bright grey cast metal reads as painted, not raw.
