[Ice] Melted Textures

Melting ice is a transition state, which makes it harder than solid ice. The surface holds a thin water film, rounded edges and trapped air, and the wet layer is what carries the reflection.

What's in this collection

  • Wet ice surface — thin water film with mirror-like patches.
  • Pitted melt — shallow hollows where meltwater has pooled.
  • Slush edge — granular half-melted crystals losing definition.
  • Refreezing surface — feathered crystal growth over melted areas.

All tiles are seamless in both directions and delivered at high resolution.

Where melted ice is used

Winter environments. Thawing lakes, roadside slush and spring snowmelt.

VFX shots. Ice transition sequences and freeze or thaw effects.

Product rendering. Drinks, coolers and frozen food packaging.

Arctic levels. Cracked shelf ice and unstable walkable surfaces.

How to use these in Blender

  1. Layer a Glossy BSDF over a rough ice base to create the water film.
  2. Set Transmission around 0.8 with IOR 1.31 for the ice itself.
  3. Keep Roughness near 0.02 on wet patches and 0.3 on dry ice.
  4. Add slight blue volume absorption for thickness.

How to use these in Unreal Engine 5

  1. Use a wetness mask to lerp roughness between dry and flooded areas.
  2. Enable Lumen so the wet film reflects the sky correctly.
  3. Add a subtle normal distortion for the water layer, separate from the ice normal.
  4. Use Single Layer Water for standing meltwater pools.

How to use these in Unity

  1. Create a URP Lit material with Smoothness above 0.9 in wet regions.
  2. Use a mask map so dry and wet areas differ within the same material.
  3. Add a reflection probe; melting ice depends on reflections to read wet.
  4. Darken the albedo under water film rather than brightening it.

Tips for melted ice specifically

Water film darkens what is underneath while raising reflectivity. Brightening the albedo to signal wetness is the most common mistake.

Melting rounds every sharp edge. If your normal map still has crisp fractures, the surface reads as freshly cracked, not thawing.

Keep reflections anisotropic on flat sheets — meltwater spreads in a direction, and a perfectly uniform mirror looks like glass.
