[Leather] Embossed Textures

Embossed leather is decoration pressed into the hide under a heated die, so the pattern exists as raised relief rather than as printed colour. That distinction drives everything about how it renders: the raised faces catch a broad soft highlight, the pressed valleys sit darker and slightly glossier where the fibres have been crushed, and every edge carries a rounded shoulder instead of a hard cut. These tiles are decorative panels rather than photoreal hides — bold, symmetrical, and built to read clearly at a distance.

What's in this collection

  • Ornamental medallions - quatrefoil and floral motifs pressed in repeating blocks, the classic bookbinding and saddlery layout.
  • Panelled mosaics - irregular padded plates separated by deep dark channels, reading as cracked or plated hide.
  • Fluted and swirled relief - long parallel ridges sweeping through a single centre point.
  • Studded lozenges - small raised diamonds spaced evenly across an otherwise plain field.
  • Faceted plates - triangular and hexagonal facets with flat faces and sharp ridge lines.
  • Strapwork and banding - raised strips crossing the surface in grids and diagonals.

Where these get used

Stylised game art. Chests, doors, armour trim, and inventory panels where a readable silhouette matters more than material realism.

Props and set dressing. Book covers, luggage, saddlery, and furniture panels in period and fantasy settings.

Graphic and motion work. Title cards, packaging mockups, and loops where the relief carries the whole composition.

How to use these in Blender

  1. Import the texture into a Principled BSDF, connecting RGB to Base Color.
  2. Drive the relief with a Bump node at 0.2-0.5. The pattern is deep, so heavy strength quickly turns plastic.
  3. Keep Roughness in the 0.35-0.55 range and dip it slightly inside the pressed valleys.
  4. Use a single dominant light. These tiles were lit from one direction, and cross-lighting flattens the relief.

How to use these in Unreal Engine 5

  1. Import the texture and create a Material using the default lit shading model.
  2. Feed a Normal map from the height detail and keep intensity moderate; the macro shape is already in the albedo.
  3. Keep Roughness mid-range and Metallic at 0.

How to use these in Unity

  1. Drop the texture into your project's Assets folder.
  2. Create a Material with a Standard or Lit shader and assign the texture to Albedo.
  3. Set Smoothness around 0.4-0.55 so the raised faces pick up a soft sheen.
  4. Assign a normal map at moderate strength for the pressed edges.

Tips for embossed relief specifically

The light direction is baked in. Every tile in this collection was lit from the same side, so mirroring or flipping a tile inverts the shadows and the relief reads as an indent instead of a raise.

Relief needs a shoulder. Pressed leather never has a sharp edge - the fibres bend before they compress - so a slightly blurred bump map looks more convincing than a crisp one.

These are decorative, not photoreal. If you need an actual hide surface with pores and drape, use the smooth grain collection instead and reserve these for panels and trim.
